Durante la Gran Guerra, BMW fabricó motores para los aviones, incluyendo el famoso triplano rojo del as alemán Barón Rojo. Tras la Primera Guerra Mundial y el Tratado de Versalles, BMW tuvo que dejar de fabricar motores de avión, dedicándose inicialmente a frenos de ferrocarril y luego a motocicletas (la R32 en 1923).
